Race and Ethnicity

It could be that students of minority and/or unrepresented races or ethnicities encounter no problems when overseas. However, it is always a good idea to be knowledgeable and prepared before you go. We recommend students of minority communities to research their destination and talk with study abroad staff about the attitudes and issues regarding their race and ethnicity specific to their location. The University Center for International Education is here to help throughout the entire process!

Questions to think about:
What stereotypes about my identity are there in the country I am going to? 
Will I be a minority while abroad?
Are there racial or ethnic issues that could affect my safety? 
Am I prepared to educate others about my identity who may not understand or be familiar?
What strategies do I have for interacting with others who may not support my identity?
